We are looking for an enthusiastic pharmacist to lead the clinical pharmacy service in Belford Hospital. You will be the expert in medicines as part of the multiprofessional team and work closely with the team to deliver high quality care for patients in this rural location.
Belford Hospital has 31 beds and provides a range of services including consultant led acute and rehabilitation inpatient care. It has an Emergency Department, a Theatre Suite, Radiology, Laboratories and a Community Led Midwifery Unit. It also provides satellite service including a Renal Unit and Systemic Therapies service.
The Pharmacy Department provides a range of services including a Clinical and technical pharmacy service. This includes dispensary services, distribution services and vaccine distribution. There is a great pharmacy team of pharmacy support workers and pharmacy technicians who support the delivery of pharmacy service. You will work closely with this team and will be required to provide supervision leadership for the technical team where needed.
You will be a member of the Belford Hospital Management Team with respect to integrating pharmacy strategy with hospital strategy and delivering improvements to patient services, this includes being on the Out of Hours Duty manager on call rota.
You would also be part of the Acute Pharmacy Clinical team which spans the pharmacies based in Belford, Raigmore Hospital in Inverness, Caithness General Hospital in Wick.
You will have the opportunity to lead project work that is based in Belford and across NHS Highland. This may be as part of the E&T or governance teams or could be part of SLWGs or committees.
Education and training are a priority for the NHS Highland team and we are experienced in providing pharmacy education. You would be supported to undertake training e.g. prescribing, clinical skills, leadership and management training. We will also support development linked to the Advance Pharmacy Practice Framework.
The successful candidate will have an undergraduate Masters Degree (or equivalent) in Pharmacy, be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council. You should also have or be prepared to work towards:
- A post-graduate qualification in a relevant area of pharmacy or advance practice framework
- Registration as an independent prescriber with the General Pharmaceutical Council
- A high level of professional competence, reasoning and judgement: with wide ranging knowledge and understanding of pharmacy practice including professional standards, and ethical and legal requirements.
- Consideration will be given to applicant with less experience or from community pharmacy to undertake the role as a development post, commencing at band 7 and progressing to band 8A after completion of any required professional development and training.

NHS Scotland is reducing their full time working week from 37.5 to 37 hours per week from 1 April 2024 but with no change in pay. This reduction will also be applied pro rata for part time staff. This advert and any subsequent offer/contract of employment therefore reflects the new working hours. However, as not all service areas will be able to adopt the 37 hour working week immediately from 1 April 2024, you may be required to work up to an additional 30 minutes per week for a temporary period for which you would be paid until the service you are working in changes rosters or working patterns to accommodate the new reduced working week.
