Full Job Description
Salary Range: £26,942 - £29,959
FTE: 1 (35 hours/week)
Term: Open
Closing Date: 13/04/2025
As an Engineering Workshop Technician, you will provide practical technical support and advice to a wide range of students, staff, and project activities. You will design, build, modify, maintain, and repair items of scientific research equipment and instrumentation as required by academic research within the Department of Physics. You will be responsible for maintaining and servicing equipment in the mechanical workshop and in the research labs.
To be considered for this role you will have completed a recognised apprenticeship, be educated to HNC level or have relevant industrial work experience in a similar role. You will have experience with manual and CNC machines, including lathes and mills, and of CAD software as well as experience and demonstrable knowledge of health and safety regulations and procedures with general IT skills, i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook. You will have experience of providing a high level of personal responsibility and experience of applying judgement to deal with daily challenges and circumstances, with limited guidance from a superior. You will have strong knowledge within the field of manufacturing and mechanical engineering. You will have good verbal and written communication skills with the ability to inform and explain technical elements to stakeholders with a varying degree of technical knowledge. You will have an ability to work autonomously, prioritising and coordinating your own workload and making decisions with minimum supervision to meet project deadlines. The ability to deliver strong customer focus, working as part of a multi-disciplinary team is essential.
The University of Strathclyde is a leading international technological university focused on delivering excellent teaching and world-class research and known for forging strong collaborative links with industry, government, business and the third sector. Challenging conventional wisdom has been fundamental to the University’s ethos for over 200 years. Today our research activity continues to be of central importance in everything we do – informing our teaching and enabling us to translate outcomes for the benefit of business, industry and society as a whole. We are continually advancing the intensity, quality and international competitiveness of our research. The Department of Physics has an international reputation for teaching and research. Our strong international research profile is supported by excellent mechanical and electronic engineering facilities that are key to continued performance at the highest levels of research. The advertised post particularly supports our high-profile activity in Quantum Technology, where we are involved widely in national and international research collaborations.
Applications are invited for an Engineering Workshop Technician to join the Department of Physics Mechanical Workshop. The successful candidate will be part of a team of researchers and other manufacturing technicians working in the areas of Experimental Quantum Optics and Photonics. Central for the role is the collaborative design and manufacture of precision mechanical components using CNC and manual lathes, mills, and other mechanical workshop machinery. Examples of the technical requirements of the research group are customised mechanical adjustment mounts for optical devices, vacuum components, and machining of laser mounts. The role involves working alongside a team of senior, junior, and trainee researchers, with collaboration in design and review stages being vital to the overall role. The work will be varied in nature but will always have a requirement for timely and professional completion and will involve engineering innovative practical solutions to facilitate the development and use of equipment for scientific research and applications.
Initial interviews for this post will be held on Friday, 25 April 2025
For informal enquiries about the post can be directed to Mr Stephen Ross, Senior Technician (stephen.ross @strath.ac.uk).
