Full Job Description
How’s this for job satisfaction: at Scottish Water we look after Scotland's most precious natural resource. From source to tap, we’re guarding Scotland’s reputation for refreshingly pure water, and caring for our environment at the same time.
Sound good? We’re looking for an E&M Field Automation Specialist (FAS) to join our team in the Grampian area.
What you’ll do
As a Field Automation Specialist at Scottish Water, you’ll be one of the go-to people keeping our telemetry systems running smoothly – the vital tech that keeps everything connected, efficient and on track.
You’ll work closely with teams across the business to understand what’s needed and set up systems that deliver. From installing outstations to fine-tuning settings, you’ll be the one making sure everything’s ticking along just right – and jumping in to troubleshoot when it’s not.
You’ll take care of software updates and hardware upgrades with minimal fuss, keeping our everything current and our software library organised and up to date.
Out in the field, you’ll be looking after our critical instrumentation – calibrating, maintaining, and fixing the equipment that helps us monitor our processes and collect accurate data. You’ll help drive performance too, producing reports on things like data quality, calibration and maintenance. You’ll be spotting ways we can make our telemetry data even better and supporting your E&M colleagues with any field automation hiccups.
What you’ll need
You’ve completed a full apprenticeship and have an HNC or NC in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or maybe you’ve built up similar experience in other ways. Either way, you know your stuff when it comes to systems, process, and sorting out those tricky telemetry issues. You’ve also got hands-on experience with calibrating instrumentation.
Databases? No problem. You know how to find what you’re looking for and spot what matters. And of course, you’ll know your way around Microsoft Office – even the fiddly bits, like table formatting.
You’re great at solving problems, making decisions on the go, and staying cool in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment. You’re also a clear and confident communicator.
As you’ll be out and about across Grampian area, a full UK driving licence is essential.
Beyond that, we’re looking for a few ‘nice-to-haves’. If you’ve got experience with water and waste water processes or have 17th/18th Edition electrical training under your belt, you’ll be off to a great start.
Looking out for you
While the work we do is important, we know it’s not the only thing that matters. That’s why we make sure you have everything you need to find a good work-life balance.
This is a full time (35 hours per week) role, with some standby requirements, but you’ll get plenty of time to recharge with 38 days of holiday every year (including public holidays). And you can even buy five more if you need a little extra time. You can also take paid time off to volunteer in your community.
When it comes to major life events we have family-friendly policies around adoption, maternity, and parental leave. And for the everyday? We embrace flexible working.
For your future, there’s our pension (the ‘know-what-you’ll-get-when-you-retire’ kind), as well as life assurance.
As for some nice extras? You can expect an annual company bonus. Not to mention access to SW Splash – handy rewards that can save you money on holidays, bills, and shopping.
The not-so-small print
This role will be a Grade 7. If you’re new to Scottish Water, you’ll join us on a starting salary of £41,000. Performance-driven pay progression would then allow you to move through the range to a maximum of £51,970.
Job offers at Scottish Water are conditional, and will be confirmed on completion of our pre-employment screening, e.g. referencing, criminal record checks, license checks, etc. These checks are conducted on our behalf by a third party. Don’t worry - we’ll ask your permission before starting these checks.
If you’re interested in this role – or know someone else who might be - we’ll be accepting applications until midnight on Sunday 6 April 2025.
