Full Job Description

Scottish Water is on a journey to enhance and mature its cloud platform, product and services. An opportunity has presented itself for a talented individual to join a talented and energetic team as a senior cloud engineer.

What You’ll Be Doing

You will design, implement and configure Azure services for a range of Azure workloads. Working with colleagues inside the organisation and across a diverse supply chain, you will setup and hone Azure landing zones in a way that supports fast upscaling of existing and new digital products and services. You be responsible for a combination of project and support work, involving the design, deployment and management of Azure cloud solutions. You will provide advice and guidance on best practice to product teams and support the development of other team members by knowledge sharing. You will identify improvements and prioritise initiatives to help strengthen our cloud maturity across all five pillars of the Azure Well-Architected Framework, as well as helping improve our Well Architected Framework review scores. You will work in collaboration with other DevOps product and platform teams to support the implementation of DevOps practices across Scottish Water.

What You’ll Need

We are looking for someone who is highly skilled in Azure and associated technologies. Previous experience of Azure DevOps and associated Azure tooling is essential.

You must demonstrate hands-on implementation experience in one or more of the following cloud adoption scenarios; cloud-scale analytics, modern application platform, Azure VMware and Azure Virtual Desktop.

You will have practical experience with a range of Azure and M365 components such as:

  • Virtual machines, API Management, Storage (Blob, File, Data Lake), Databases (Azure SQL), IoT, Containers (AKS, Azure Functions), Networking (NSG's, Azure Firewall, Application Gateway), Data Factory, Stream Analytics, Logic Apps, Functions, Service Bus and Power Platform.
  • Infrastructure as code (ideally Bicep) and generation of scripts for the provisioning of cloud resources.
  • Configuration of networks, connectivity and security.
  • Building CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps and Git.

You will be expected to:

  • Work with architects and development teams to ensure that engineering tasks are delivered effectively, efficiently and timeously.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement and implement them.
  • Bring fresh ideas based on past successes (and failures) from previous engagements to new scenarios
  • Troubleshoot problems that may arise from applications or integration of various components.

You should also be able to demonstrate proficiency in one or more coding languages and be skilled in the use of scripting languages such as PowerShell.

The successful candidate must have a strong ability to guide and coach others and be able to confidently articulate rationale for any recommendations.

Alongside this, we need a self-motivator who can confidently liaise with stakeholders at all levels and has a strong customer focus, which is at the heart of what we do at Scottish Water.

Looking out for you

While the work we do is important, we know it’s not the only thing that matters. That’s why we make sure you have everything you need to find a good work-life balance.

This is a full time (35 hours per week) role, Monday to Friday. But you’ll get plenty of time to recharge with 38 days of holiday every year (including public holidays). And you can even buy five more if you need a little extra time. You can also take paid time off to volunteer in your community.

When it comes to major life events we have family-friendly policies around adoption, maternity, and parental leave. And for the everyday? We embrace flexible working.

For your future, there’s our pension (the ‘know-what-you’ll-get-when-you-retire’ kind), as well as life assurance.

As for some nice extras? You can expect an annual company bonus. Not to mention access to SW Splash – handy rewards that can save you money on holidays, bills, and shopping.

The not-so-small print

This role will be a Grade 7. If you’re new to Scottish Water, you’ll join us on a starting salary of £41,000. Performance-driven pay progression would then allow you to move through the range to a maximum of £51,970

This role offers hybrid working, so you can be based anywhere in the Central Belt as long as you're within commuting distance of one of our main office hubs in Edinburgh< Dundee, Inverness or Stepps nr Glasgow.

Job offers at Scottish Water are conditional. We’ll be able to confirm your start date once you pass our Pre-Employment Screening. This is done for us by a third party. We’ll ask for your permission before we initiate the checks.

If you’re interested in this role – or know someone else who might be, we’ll be accepting applications until midnight on the 1st April 2025.

A few final things worth knowing…

Research shows that some people avoid applying for jobs unless they can meet every single criteria. If you’re interested in this job, but don’t tick all the boxes, apply anyway! We hardly ever hire people who can do every part of a job from Day One. Everyone has a learning curve. So don’t rule yourself out!

Let us know if there are any changes we can make to our recruitment process to help you perform at your best. Lots of our people have disabilities or neurodiverse conditions (including some of our recruiters!). We're also aware that some people might be experiencing temporary challenges because of life events, like menopause. We’re very used to making adjustments, so please don’t be afraid to ask.

As part of our commitment to developing a flourishing Scotland, it’s important that all our employees are Scottish taxpayers. If you join us, your home address will need to be in Scotland. If you don’t already live here, you'll need to commit to moving here within your first three months.

Finally (finally!), candidates who haven’t submitted an application in the last 12 months will have their records removed from our recruitment database. You won’t need to do anything. Your data will be automatically deleted.

We’re here to help. Ask us anything.
