Full Job Description
ROLE OVERVIEW
SCC is seeking a dynamic and experienced Policy & Communications Manager to lead our policy development, advocacy, and strategic communications. This role is pivotal in shaping SCC’s influence on key economic, business, and workforce issues, ensuring that the interests of Scottish businesses are effectively represented at the highest levels.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Policy Development & Advocacy:
- Research, analyse, and develop policy positions on key economic issues.
- Engage with members, industry leaders, and policymakers to gather insights and evidence.
- Draft reports, consultation responses, and briefing papers to support SCC’s advocacy efforts.
Government & Stakeholder Engagement:
- Build and maintain relationships with government, business leaders, stakeholders and the
- Chamber network.
- Represent SCC at meetings, roundtables, and events, advocating for member interests.
- Monitor policy developments and legislative changes, providing timely updates to SCC leadership
- and members.
Communications & Public Relations:
- Support the development and execution of strategic communication plans to enhance SCC’s
- visibility and influence.
- Draft press releases, opinion pieces, and policy briefings for media and stakeholders.
- Input into SCC’s digital and social media presence, ensuring clear and impactful messaging.
Member Engagement & Support:
- Work closely and directly with SCC’s network of local Chambers to ensure their policy concerns
- are identified and addressed.
- Provide guidance and policy insights to Chamber members, supporting their business needs.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in policy development, public affairs, or communications.
- Strong understanding and demonstration of Scottish and UK government policy and the business landscape.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience in drafting reports, policy papers, and media content.
- Proven ability to build relationships with stakeholders at all levels, including government officials and business leaders.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and deliver high-quality outputs under tight deadlines.
DESIRABLE SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- Experience working within a business membership organisation, trade body, private sector or think tank.
- Knowledge of economic development, labour market policy, or business regulation.
- Experience in media relations and digital communications.
